OHIOANS CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT THEIR SMARTPHONES

COLUMBUS, Ohio, – Strategic Research Group today announced the results of its AskOhio survey of Ohioans, which found that a majority of Ohioans now own a smartphone—and are finding them hard to put down.

More Ohioans have smartphones than not. About 51% of adult Ohioans own a smartphone. Respondents in the 18-24 age range, college graduates, and those in higher income brackets were all more likely to own smartphones. While the 18-24 age range had the highest rate of smartphone ownership (86%), at least 69% of all respondents age 44 and under own a smartphone.

Among those who don't own a smartphone, cost and lack of need are the primary reasons. A third of those who do not own a smartphone say it's because they're too expensive, and another 20% feel that a regular cell phone meets their needs. In particular, cost is the biggest barrier for 18-24 year olds (80%), while respondents age 45 and older were more likely to say a regular cell phone was sufficient for them (21% among 45-64 year olds, and 24% among those 65 and older).

The vast majority of smartphone owners feel their phone is essential to them. Over 83% of respondents said their smartphone was either "very important" or "somewhat important" for their everyday living. In particular, among the 25-34 age range, 64% said their smartphone was "very important" for their everyday life.

The concept of turning their smartphone off makes many people uncomfortable. Overall, 58% of Ohioans who own a smartphone indicated that they would be "very uncomfortable" or "somewhat uncomfortable" going without their smartphone for one week, and 40% said they would be "very uncomfortable" or "somewhat uncomfortable" going without it for a single day.
